Centennial House: A Classic Sewanee, Tennessee Wedding Venue
Tucked into the quiet beauty of Sewanee, Centennial House is one of those rare venues that feels both storied and completely new. And I know that intimately—because I was the first planner to produce an event here in 2021. Naturally, it didn’t stay a secret for long.

A Historic Home, Reimagined
Originally a Southern neo-classical residence, Centennial House had fallen into disrepair before its full restoration by Dryden Studio. The renovation was thoughtful and restrained—preserving the integrity of the architecture while quietly modernizing the experience. The brick was restored. Floors refinished. Porches rebuilt. Details—especially around the fireplaces and columns—were carefully brought back to life.
What makes this transformation so compelling is what wasn’t lost: the soul of the home.
What was added, however, is what makes it exceptional for events—updated systems, functional flow, and even an elevator for seamless load-in.
The Grounds: Where the Magic Happens
The lawn is the reason.
Expansive, shaded by mature trees, and effortlessly elegant—it creates a natural framework for a tented reception that feels elevated but never overproduced. There’s a built-in sense of scale without sacrificing intimacy.
It’s the kind of setting where design doesn’t have to fight the environment—it collaborates with it.
And for planners (and clients) who care about atmosphere, that matters.
Why It Works So Well for Weddings
Centennial House sits in that elusive sweet spot between beauty and functionality.
The interior offers a refined, timeless setting for smaller gatherings (20–50 guests feels especially at home here)
The grounds can accommodate much larger celebrations, with capacity up to around 275 guests or 55×85 Sail Tent
There’s a catering kitchen, green room, and ample restrooms—details that quietly make or break an event
Parking is surprisingly easy thanks to its proximity to the university’s facilities — the football field across the street
And then there’s the climate: Sewanee sits on the Cumberland Plateau, which means milder temperatures and less humidity than much of the surrounding region—a small but meaningful luxury for summer weddings.
A Planner’s Perspective
When I first walked the property, I knew exactly what it could be. Not just beautiful—but versatile. Not just historic—but relevant.
Producing the first event here meant approaching the space with intention: letting the architecture lead, using the lawn to its fullest potential, and creating an experience that felt like it belonged. Now, seeing how quickly it’s become a sought-after venue—it makes sense.
Centennial House isn’t just another Southern venue. It’s a canvas.
There are plenty of beautiful places to get married. But very few that offer this kind of balance—history, design integrity, and true usability.
Centennial House does.
And if you’re drawn to spaces that feel layered, intentional, and a little unexpected, this one is worth your attention.
